Lenten Altarcloth - Cross of the Passion

A Community Visual Response to Isaiah 53, The Suffering Servant

During one Lenten season, over 70 youth and adult members of Bethany Lutheran Church participated in a meditative-visual activity. After reading and contemplating the rich descriptive text of Isaiah 53, each person selected several words or a phrase that impacted them, and wrote it in any desired arrangement, with various colors of oil pastel, on a white 14" x 9" pellon cross. All the "text crosses" were painted purple, and then artist-arranged on long vertical pellon cloth, resulting in five sanctuary hangings. An altar frontal with four interchangeable community-made crosses adorned the chancel.
