Benediction

3' x 4' (Cloth feathers, seed beads, thread) 1992

This art began as a wearable vest, crazy pieced, of various fabrics, which was worn several times. Then, I separated the vest back from the two front pieces, into this arrangement, and constructed the back, T cross shape, of many cloth strips. This art is a personal reference to a Pastor in his robes, standing, with arms outstretched, at the close of a service, giving the Benediction to the congregation. But the art is also a reference to the end of life, the body returning to the ground (earth colors, small seed beads), to wait for Christ's return - (the white lily in the middle, top). The piece also references the Holy Spirit, through the wing-like top, and the black feathers in the center.

(A Valparaiso University Guild purchase for the Brauer Museum of Art.)
